Recently, information has been released that has inflamed the so-called “Russiagate” that primarily involves former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The Russiagate of Giuseppe Conte is inflamed
The revelations were published yesterday by La Repubblica and concern some documents about two missions to Rome in August and September 2019 by the then U.S. Secretary of Justice Bill Barr.
According to La Repubblica, these documents would show “some significant omissions in the reconstruction of that affair” by then Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The affair is Russiagate in the U.S. or the alleged active support given by Russia to the election of Donald Trump.
According to what was revealed by Repubblica, in 2019, there would have been the involvement of Italian intelligence in favor of Russia and against the U.S. Democratic Party.
In 2019, in fact, the 2020 U.S. presidential elections were being prepared, those in which Donald Trump later lost and was not re-elected.
At that juncture, the Democratic Party, a rival of Trump’s Republican Party, was trying to accuse the then U.S. president of having won the previous elections, also thanks to the direct support of Vladimir Putin’s Russian regime.
Documents regarding Barr’s missions would reveal omissions by the Conte government to degrade U.S. Russiagate.
In particular, the Conte government would have tried to deregister the involvement of Italian intelligence in support of Trump as a “trivial affair of courtesy between allied countries.” The allied countries, in this case, were Italy and the U.S.
How did the affair arise?
The issue concerns the actions of Gennaro Vecchione, a kind of unknown that Conte had appointed to the top of the Department for Information and Security (DIS), i.e., Italian intelligence, against everyone’s advice.
According to Repubblica, the two were involved in a matter with very opaque contours and, above all, “outside of any protocol and institutional framework.”
Conte is also accused of having bartered a personal advantage, namely Trump’s political support in his favor, with an “exchange of information with a high political dividend” regarding an alleged involvement of the FBI in an alleged plot against the White House.
The key point is precisely this, namely the help Vecchione allegedly offered to give Barr. That help consisted of hostile intelligence activities against one of the U.S. security agencies accused of political disloyalty by Trump and against former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
In light of this information, Repubblica accuses Conte of having long confused his personal interest with that of the nation and making borderline political use of government intelligence services.
The problem is that this could also be only the first step of an investigation to prove the existence of even closer ties between the Russian regime of Vladimir Putin and Giuseppe Conte, passing through ties with the entourage of Donald Trump.
That political season now appears to be over, and that may not allow those involved to have the political backing and coverage to prevent this investigation from going forward.
However, it remains to be understood if what La Repubblica claims to have uncovered is true since it cannot be considered an impartial source and if a possible continuation of the investigation will lead to other discoveries.
However, many indications lead one to believe that there may have been some kind of special, or at least close, relationship between Conte’s Italy, Putin’s Russia, and Trump’s U.S., and in these times, the risk is that this may eventually play against Conte’s attempt to establish himself as the political leader of choice for the 5 Star Movement.
