Gemini Cryptocurrency Exchange Plans Entry Into Prediction Markets Arena

  • Gemini Space Station Inc. prepares to launch prediction market services post-IPO.
  • The firm filed with the CFTC to become a registered derivatives exchange.

Gemini Space Station Inc. is strategically preparing to roll out prediction market services as an extension of its ambitious expansion strategy after a successful public listing. The cryptocurrency trading company, which was started by two twin entrepreneurs, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, submitted the required paperwork to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to become a derivatives exchange.

According to sources who are close to the situation, Gemini seeks to penetrate this fast-growing market segment as soon as possible in the coming months. The suggested platform would also allow users to buy and sell event contracts depending on real-world results, as competing platforms do in the market.

This is a strategic initiative that is one of the most important business expansions of Gemini since the completion of its first public offering in September, which created a lot of investor interest. The company was able to raise $433 million in an upsized offering and attained a valuation of $4.4 billion in total.

Growing Market Attracts Major Players

The prediction market has been growing at an explosive rate in recent times, with the established platforms registering unprecedented trading volumes in various weeks of the fall season. Kalshi, one of the largest prediction markets, made $1.2 billion in transactions between late October and early November, its highest milestone.

Another large player in this space, Polymarket, has also passed the billion-dollar mark on several occasions in weekly trading volumes this year. Some well-known technology and financial firms have been declaring integration plans or investments in this new sector over the last few months, including well-known platforms.

MetaMask, Coinbase, DraftKings, and the World by Sam Altman have already integrated or are planning to integrate prediction markets to their respective users. The parent organization of the New York Stock Exchange, Intercontinental Exchange, showed great confidence in Polymarket by pouring $2 billion at a valuation of $9 billion. Kalshi is also a multibillion-dollar valuation by investors, which proves that there is a high level of institutional interest in prediction markets in the future, as regulatory frameworks keep changing.
