European researchers are leveraging NVIDIA’s 6G research portfolio to develop AI-native wireless networks, enhancing innovation, sustainability, and customer experiences across the continent.
European telecommunications institutions are making significant strides towards developing the next generation of cellular technology, 6G, with the assistance of NVIDIA’s advanced research portfolio. This initiative, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI) from the outset, is set to transform wireless networks into AI-native platforms, fostering innovation and enhancing customer experiences, according to NVIDIA.
Collaborations Across Europe
Notable collaborations have emerged across Europe. In the United Kingdom, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has partnered with NVIDIA to advance AI development in telecom. This collaboration provides UK universities with access to powerful AI tools and training resources, such as NVIDIA AI Aerial and Sionna, to support research in AI-native wireless networks. Sir Chris Bryant, the UK’s minister of state for data protection and telecoms, emphasized the initiative’s role in positioning the UK as a leader in advanced connectivity technologies.
In Finland, the University of Oulu is utilizing the NVIDIA Isaac Sim to conduct research on wireless channel estimation. This project, which employs a real-time network digital twin, aims to advance AI and machine learning features for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC).
Meanwhile, in France, OpenAirInterface (OAI) collaborates with NVIDIA to enhance AI-native wireless networks by integrating its open-source virtualized RAN stack with NVIDIA’s GPU-accelerated systems. This partnership allows researchers to innovate in 5G and 6G radio access networks using AI at every layer.
Innovative Research in Germany
Germany’s Fraunhofer HHI is pioneering research on neuromorphic wireless cognition for robotic control, leveraging NVIDIA’s AI Aerial suite. The research involves using event-based cameras and neuromorphic processors to improve transmission quality over base stations. Additionally, Rohde & Schwarz, in collaboration with NVIDIA, is setting benchmarks in AI-powered wireless communication, integrating advanced digital twin technology for testing 5G-Advanced and 6G neural receivers.
Europe’s Role in 6G Development
Europe continues to play a pivotal role in the development of wireless networks, driven by substantial governmental support and initiatives like the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking. These programs unite universities and industry leaders to create AI-native networks, emphasizing sustainability and security.
NVIDIA’s Contribution to AI-Native 6G
NVIDIA’s 6G research portfolio is central to these efforts, providing a comprehensive suite of tools for developing AI algorithms, simulating them, and deploying them into wireless stacks. This includes accelerated compute infrastructure and software libraries like NVIDIA AI Aerial and Sionna. Moreover, the NVIDIA 6G Developer Program offers early access to advanced tools and a global community of innovators, fostering collaboration and accelerating technological advancements.
As Europe continues to lead in AI-native 6G development, NVIDIA’s technologies and collaborative efforts across the continent are crucial in shaping the future of telecommunications.
