As regulators crack down on Elon Musk’s efforts to turn the social network into a safe haven of free speech, Musk is facing further criticism from the US and EU over his ownership of Twitter.
In a video chat with Musk, Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner for the internal market, warned him that there was still huge work ahead to bring the platform into compliance with Brussels’ regulations.
On Musk’s platform Twitter, Mr. Breton posted a brief, silent video clip of his videoconference, but he then included a link to a longer statement on the Mastodon network.
“I welcome Elon Musk’s statements of intent to get Twitter 2.0 ready for the DSA. But let’s also be clear that there is still huge work ahead.Twitter will have to implement transparent user policies, significantly reinforce content moderation and protect freedom of speech, tackle disinformation with resolve and limit targeted advertising, Mr Breton said, as reported by Business Wire.
Many of Twitter’s previous policies which were intended to fight misinformation have been rolled back by Musk. He promised a “general amnesty” that would start this week, restoring the majority of suspended accounts. He had already restored a few high-profile accounts that had broken Twitter’s content guidelines.
Has Elon Musk’s ‘Misunderstanding’ with Apple been solved?
In October, Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, and since then, he has made some contentious decisions about how the website will be handled. He grabbed headlines after firing approximately half of the 8,000 employees of the company.
Musk had earlier said on Twitter that Apple may remove Twitter from its App Store. However, after meeting Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, Musk said that the misunderstanding has been cleared.
“Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.”
