Yesterday, NEAR and Coinbase announced a new initiative that aims to provide a truly open AI, accessible and user-centered.
This is the Open Agents Alliance (OAA), an alliance that includes, in addition to NEAR AI and Coinbase Onramp & AgentKit, also Eliza Labs, Aethir, Bitte Protocol, Akash, Phala Network, Hyperbolic, Exabits, SWEAT Economy, HOT, Frax Finance, Arc, and MotherDAO.
NEAR x Coinbase: the alliance for an open AI
Open Agent Alliance is “a shared commitment to making the future of AI agents and assistants open, user-owned, and available to everyone globally, fairly rewarding its creators,” as stated on their official website.
This is an initiative where users own their own data, and that intelligenza artificiale is a public good.
The goal is to ensure that the AI agents become economic actors, offering more than just information, while protecting privacy and rewarding open source contributors.
All this will be pursued by creating an open ecosystem in which assistenti AI seamlessly integrate into daily life as attori economici.
The ecosystem will be based on a simple on-ramp and off-ramp system in fiat currency designed for non-crypto users, with the goal of reaching 10 times the current crypto user base. It will contain front-end applications with integrated user bases capable of leveraging AI assistants, on a secure hosting infrastructure that minimizes the costs of creating and distributing agents.
The set of physical hardware providers can be leveraged by any hosting platform in a secure manner by default, and it will also be protected from physical attacks.
Furthermore, the ecosystem will be equipped with an open-source developer kit that allows the community to quickly develop features and learn from each other, as well as a chain-independent payment system that fairly compensates all contributors at every step.
The collaboration of Coinbase for a generation of AI
The group of the well-known US crypto exchange is involved in this initiative as a co-founder, together with NEAR AI, through its subsidiary Coinbase Onramp & Agent Kit.
Given that artificial intelligence is the future, but also already the present, of financial markets, it should not be surprising at all that Coinbase has decided to embark on this path.
Even the involvement of NEAR is not coincidental, given that it is a crypto project launched five years ago with the specific purpose of creating a community-managed cloud computing platform aimed precisely at dApp developers.
Thanks to Coinbase, it will be possible to easily include end-to-end payment tools within the new ecosystem, and on-ramp and off-ramp paths in fiat currency, with simple tools to convert crypto to fiat and vice versa.

“While the global web continues to shift towards mobile users, we believe that artificial intelligence should be accessible to everyone. In collaboration with leaders in hosting, privacy, and payments, we are building a globally distributed network capable of providing artificial intelligence services securely, privately, and at no cost to end users. This effort extends well beyond the current 350 million blockchain users, extending the power of cryptography to provide artificial intelligence tools accessible to all”.
The VP of BD at Coinbase Onramp and Agentkit, Dan Kim, added:
“We are honored to join the Open Agent Alliance, an initiative that reflects our commitment to promoting open and decentralized innovation. With Coinbase Onramp evolving as a fundamental component for AI transactions and AgentKit empowering any agent with a wallet, we look forward to contributing to a more accessible and collaborative AI future”.
