Coinbase Addresses ‘Broken’ UX for NFTs During Onchain Summer

Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong is celebrating ‘Onchain Summer’ by emphasizing the need to enhance the user experience on the Coinbase app, especially for NFTs. He vowed in a tweet to fix what he described as the ‘broken’ user interface soon after the launch of its new layer 2 network, Base.

In a recent tweet, Armstrong stated, “I just minted Munch, ‘The Scream,’ celebrating @BuildOnBase bringing people onchain. It’s Onchain Summer.”

Base Rolls Out Onchain Summer

Onchain Summer, hosted since the launch of Base, is a multi-week event for art and gaming communities. Multiple companies are reportedly hosting nonfungible token (NFT) mints on the Base network from Aug. 9 to 31. The official website invites everyone to “Get onchain this summer” and “bask in the Onchain Summer sun.”

The launches include the Coca-Cola collection, mixing artworks with the iconic Coca-Cola bottle. Classics like “The Scream” by Edvard Munch and “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer are among the featured works.

Upcoming events include NFT maker platform Zora’s debut on Base on Aug. 16. Manifold will showcase its favorite artists for Onchain Summer on Aug. 21.

Base’s Rapid Growth and User Experience

In about a week since its launch, Base has emerged as one of the top Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chains for NFT transfers.

Base is now the third most popular EVM by transfer volume, with daily active users of the Base L2 network holding steady at around 100,000 as of Aug. 14.

According to Dune data, Base users have already bridged more than $200 million in token value.

Meanwhile, Armstrong recognizes user experience issues as part of the Onchain Summer celebration. He pointed out the need for improvement, stating:

“One thing #OnchainSummer is exposing is just how broken our UX is in the main Coinbase app for NFTs, dApps, and L2s today. Sorry to say, but true. If we face truth, we can get motivated to improve it. These need to be first class experiences, and #OnchainSummer is a great impetus to have every employee feel that pain ourselves and fix it.”

Armstrong further noted that while Coinbase Wallet is ahead in user experience, much work still needs to be done. He also invited feedback on any UX pain points, vowing rapid updates in the next two weeks to address them.
