In Brief
- CNN to use Kalshi data across political, economic, and cultural news programming.
- New Kalshi-powered ticker to show real-time predictions during live CNN broadcasts.
- Kalshi hit $4.5B in monthly volume, but faces legal and regulatory challenges in the U.S.
CNN has partnered with Kalshi, a regulated prediction market platform, to integrate real-time market data across its programming. The collaboration enables CNN to use Kalshi’s forecast data in reporting on political, economic, and cultural developments.
According to the company, Kalshi will serve as CNN’s official partner for prediction market insights moving forward. A new on-screen ticker powered by Kalshi will be launched to display live probabilities during key segments.
CNN’s Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten will oversee the internal use of Kalshi’s market data. This integration is intended to support accurate reporting and provide viewers with market-driven signals on emerging trends.
Kalshi Data to Support Programming Amid Legal and Regulatory Scrutiny
Kalshi stated that its data would help journalists surface credible information about real-time probabilities of major events. The company also noted its platform had correctly forecasted the New York mayoral race just minutes after polls closed.
The platform has surpassed $4.5 billion in trading volume in November, with weekly volumes now exceeding $1 billion. Kalshi’s recent Series E funding round raised $1 billion and brought its valuation to over $5 billion.
Despite rapid growth, Kalshi faces a class-action lawsuit alleging it acted as an unlicensed sportsbook under Massachusetts gambling laws. The case accuses the firm of facilitating more than $1 billion in sports bets without proper authorization.
Regulatory uncertainty around prediction markets in the U.S. continues, particularly on whether election or sports-related contracts are financial products or gambling tools. Kalshi and others remain under scrutiny from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
At the same time, firms like Galaxy Digital are in talks to provide liquidity for Kalshi and its competitor, Polymarket. Industry observers say market-based forecasting is gaining traction among media, investors, and analysts.
This move by CNN highlights a broader shift toward data-driven journalism using market signals alongside traditional sources.
