Cloudflare Unlocks Agentic Commerce With Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx

TLDR:

  • Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx collaborate to secure AI agent transactions globally.
  • Web Bot Auth protocol ensures merchants can identify trusted AI agents instantly.
  • Agentic commerce allows AI agents to buy goods using credit, debit, crypto, and other payments.
  • Merchants gain tools to verify AI agents and protect customers from fraudulent traffic.

Cloudflare is partnering with leading payment firms to bring AI agents into mainstream commerce. The company announced collaborations with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to create secure payment rails for agentic commerce.

The initiative aims to let AI agents shop autonomously at millions of merchants worldwide. The project relies on Web Bot Auth protocols, allowing merchants to distinguish trusted agents from malicious bots.

According to Cloudflare, this marks the start of an industry-wide push to integrate AI-driven commerce safely and efficiently.

The collaboration is also aimed at creating a consistent framework for AI agents across major payment networks. Developers using Cloudflare’s Agents SDK will soon be able to implement these protocols.

Merchants can process payments from multiple methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and crypto. Cloudflare said the approach will safeguard both consumers and merchants while allowing AI agents to handle entire purchases independently.

Web Bot Auth Powers Agentic Commerce

The Web Bot Auth protocol underpins the Trusted Agent Protocol developed with Visa. Visa’s Jack Forestell stated that the system ensures merchants no longer must choose between blocking bots and serving real customers.

AI agents can now authenticate, confirm intent, and transact without compromising security. Merchants gain transparency and can securely accept payments from agents using various methods.

Mastercard is integrating Web Bot Auth into Mastercard Agent Pay, says Jorn Lambert. Merchants can now identify trusted AI agents and offer a tailored shopping experience. Lambert emphasized the framework simplifies agent verification and ensures scalability.

American Express will leverage the same protocols for its agentic commerce program, according to Luke Gebb. The approach allows merchants to maintain trust while adopting AI-driven transactions.

Industry players such as Adyen, Checkout.com, Circle, Fiserv, Microsoft, Nuvei, Shopify, Webflow, and Worldpay are providing feedback to evolve the protocol.

Cloudflare is contributing through open standards like the Agent Payments Protocol and its NET Dollar initiative. These efforts aim to accelerate agentic commerce adoption at Internet scale.

Securing Transactions and Customer Trust

Agentic commerce lets AI agents handle purchases from start to finish, but merchants face verification challenges. Web Bot Auth allows merchants to assess agent identity and intent immediately.

Merchants can maintain customer relationships, recognizing account history even when AI agents initiate transactions. Payments from AI agents can be processed across credit, debit, and crypto networks.

Cloudflare said this system addresses the rise of malicious bots by controlling front-door access to merchants. By providing a secure authentication layer, merchants can deploy AI agents with confidence.

Cloudflare’s Chief Strategy Officer Stephanie Cohen highlighted that trust is built by design in the network. Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx aim to make the process simple and secure while enabling widespread adoption of AI agent commerce.

The collaboration represents one of the first large-scale integrations of AI shopping agents with traditional financial infrastructure. Sources indicate the initiative will expand globally in the coming months. Merchants and developers can begin testing integrations as protocols roll out.
