Despite being hated by a large portion of fans, the newest entries in the Pokémon series of games have been some of the most financially successful games in Nintendo’s recent history. They sold over 10 million copies in 3 days, however, the games’ poor graphics and performance issues invited criticism from many avid fans of the series.
Could metaverse-based play-to-earn Pokémon successor Axie Infinity (AXS) step up to the plate and go toe-to-toe with Pokémon? Can new meme coin Big Eyes (BIG) also blow up to reach the same level of hype as Pokémon?
Axie Infinity vs Pokémon: Gameplay
With competitive Pokémon is increasingly becoming a game of instant kill rock, paper, scissors with tiny little mice Pokémon decimating entire teams, players are increasingly becoming frustrated with the metagame.
Axie Infinity (AXS) on the other hand has a much deeper level of strategy involved with team building. Each Axie is composed of 6 NFT body parts with unique characteristics and traits. Players need to carefully combine these to create a unique and powerful Axie to win in competition.
Additionally, transferring old Pokémon from older games is a very arduous process. This is completely skipped out with NFT based games like Axie Infinity, as each player has complete ownership of their Axie NFTs. This means that should Axie Infinity update or release a spin-off or sequel, there will be no issue of transferability between games.
Cuteness In Designs
Whilst Axie Infinity has a deeper level of strategy as you are able to build your own custom Axie, this also is its weakness when compared to Pokémon. Each Pokémon has a team of designers creating a bespoke design for each creature, combining interesting elements of different animals together. Axies are more of a Frankenstein hybrid, and though they are still cute, when compared with Gamefreak’s deliberate design, Pokémon wins every time.
Some of the cutest and most iconic designs of Pokémon come from simplicity. Emolga is an adorable electric flying squirrel grinning ear to ear and generally just looking ecstatic (pun intended). Pokémon’s most iconic mascot Pikachu, similarly has a simple design that makes it so cute and stick in your head. Big Eyes (BIG), has a similarly cute design, with its anime inspired cat having adorably large eyes.
Can They Catch Up?
Axie Infinity (AXS) is one of the post popular play-to-earn games on the market right now. It is nowhere near the size of Pokémon – as Pokémon has been putting out games since the 90s, but relative to its size, Axie Infinity is doing very well. With the emergence of play-to-earn games only being very recent, it is bound to pick up momentum with the Web 3.0 movement. As time goes on Axie Infinity is likely to garner many loyal fans, as will Big Eyes (BIG). Big Eyes aesthetically has the chops to go head-to-head with Pokémon, and having sold over $10 million in pre-sales already, it could explode like Dogecoin (DOGE).
Final Thoughts
Though it may be comparing apples to oranges, there are a lot of similarities between Pokémon, Axie Infinity and Big Eyes. Axie Infinity and Big Eyes both have the potential to break through and create a cult following similar to Dogecoin, which would rival the Pokémon fever in the 90s.
