Binance Seeks Executive’s Release from Nigeria, Questions Unfair Treatment

  • Binance CEO asserts that the exchange is working relentlessly to release Gambaryan from Nigerian custody.
  • Richard Teng states that Gambaryan is treated unfairly and unjustly by the government.
  • If the US government declares Gambaryan’s arrest unlawful, it could expedite the release process.

Binance is actively working to secure the release of its executive, Tigran Gambaryan, from Nigerian custody.

Citing Gambaryan’s declining health and the Nigerian government’s allegedly unfair treatment, Binance CEO Richard Teng emphasized the exchange’s ongoing efforts to bring him back to the US.

At the Token2049 conference in Singapore on September 19, Teng spoke out against what he perceived as the Nigerian government’s injustice towards Gambaryan. He criticized the authority’s alleged biased approach to Binance’s executive, stating that Gambaryan is “held unjustly, unfairly.” He added:

“It is distressing for all of us. Especially for the families. For us at Binance, this is a top priority for us. We have a task force internally working across the clock, looking at different avenues from legal to political.”

Gambaryan’s Arrest and Health Concerns

The Binance executive has been detained by the Nigerian government for over six months. Earlier this year, Gambaryan was taken into custody by the Nigerian authorities in Abuja in connection with Binance’s alleged involvement in $26 billion in illicit inflows. Soon, reports emerged about his worsening health, with complications from a herniated disc and instances of pneumonia, malaria, and tonsillitis.

During his recent trial on September 2, he was observed in a distressing condition, relying on crutches. Despite requesting assistance from the prison guard to walk, he was forced to limp into the courtroom, dragging his legs. Witnessing his visible pain, his family and acquaintances, including the Binance chief, have called for justice and demanded his release.

Binance CEO’s Plea

In response to what he described as the Nigerian government’s “inhumane treatment” of Gambaryan, Teng shared an X post calling for the immediate release of the Binance executive. He asserted that Gambaryan should be released and reunited with his family.

As Tigran Gambaryan’s health deteriorates, Binance CEO Richard Teng has intensified his pleas to Nigerian authorities. He hopes to secure Gambaryan’s release and ensure he receives proper medical attention. He believes that if the US government designates Gambaryan’s arrest as unlawful, it could speed up the process of his release.
