Anthropic Expands to Asia with Tokyo Office and Japan AI Safety Partnership

Anthropic, a company known for its focus on AI safety and research, has announced the opening of its first Asia-Pacific office in Tokyo. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion efforts. CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei visited Tokyo to meet with Prime Minister Takaichi, engage with members of the LDP Digitization Headquarters Committee, and sign a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Japan AI Safety Institute, according to Anthropic.

Building Shared Standards for AI Evaluation

The newly signed Memorandum of Cooperation with the Japan AI Safety Institute aims to establish collaborative efforts in developing AI evaluation methodologies. This partnership is part of Anthropic’s broader strategy to engage with international institutions, building on previous collaborations with the US Center for AI Standards and Innovation and the UK’s AI Security Institute. These efforts are focused on creating shared standards for assessing AI capabilities and understanding potential risks.

Anthropic’s commitment to global AI safety is further demonstrated by its participation in the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group, which promotes safe and trustworthy AI development worldwide. This aligns with the company’s ongoing work to foster innovation while ensuring security in AI applications.

Japan’s Approach to AI Adoption

Japan’s approach to AI has been characterized by a focus on enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them. Hidetoshi Tojo, Representative Director and President of Anthropic in Japan, highlighted the country’s emphasis on using AI for productivity-enhancing tasks, such as academic research and document editing. This approach reflects a broader trend in Japan, which ranks in the top 25% globally for AI adoption according to Anthropic’s Economic Index.

Major Japanese enterprises, including Rakuten, Nomura Research Institute, Panasonic, and Classmethod, are already leveraging AI technologies to improve efficiency and productivity. These companies report significant gains in areas like coding projects and document analysis, underscoring the potential for AI to augment human capabilities.

Supporting Japan’s Creative Community

Anthropic has also strengthened its ties with Japan’s cultural institutions, extending its partnership with the Mori Art Museum. This collaboration includes involvement in upcoming exhibitions, such as “Roppongi Crossing 2025: What Passes Is Time. We Are Eternal.” This initiative is part of Anthropic’s efforts to integrate AI into the creative sector, following the success of past projects like the “MACHINE LOVE: Video Game, AI and Contemporary Art” exhibition.

Anthropic plans to expand further in the Asia-Pacific region, with future offices slated for Seoul and Bengaluru. This expansion reflects the company’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting technological progress that enhances human development.
