Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) NFT collection’s logo seems to have been utilized without a license or the artist’s consent. An alert Twitter user saw the resemblance on Friday; the image’s maker, Easy Drawing Tutorial, and Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano later confirmed the similarity.
When Yuga Labs announced the BAKC collection in June 2021 and filed for a trademark in November of the same year, Easy Drawing Tutorial’s official Twitter had already shared a picture of a virtually similar wolf skull in April.
Contracted Freelancer
Those who consider themselves to be “non-artists” may follow along with Simple Drawing Tutorial’s step-by-step instructions to draw a wide variety of cartoonish creatures and objects. The rules and conditions of Easy Drawing Tutorials expressly forbid making any monetary use of the site’s original material in any way.
Solano claims that Yuga Labs contracted a freelancer to develop the logo and that the company has contacted the designer as well as Easy Drawing Tutorials in an effort to learn more about the infringement claim.
Moreover, Solano said that Yuga Labs will be approaching marketplaces to request that the logo be removed and updated on their websites. A free set of NFTs from the Bored Ape Kennel Club was made available to anybody with a Bored Ape wallet. According to Solano, the collection was planned from the outset to be about generating funds for charity, and it ended up earning over a million dollars for animal welfare organizations.
The BAKC collection is one of numerous NFT collections established by Yuga Labs; the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection is the most well-known of them, with a market worth of over $1.2 billion.
