Serenade founder Max Shand compares the release to the black band T-shirt that concertgoers and fans can purchase.
British rock band Muse has announced that their next album will be released on the Polygon-based “eco-friendly” NFT platform Serenade. The band’s ninth studio album ‘Will of the People’ is set to be released on August 26. The album will be the first of its kind to qualify for the charts in the United Kingdom and Australia. It will retail for £20 and will have 1000 NFT copies.
The album will also be available in physical format and on streaming platforms. Upon purchase of the NFT, fans of Muse will receive a downloadable, signed, high-res FLAC version of the album. They will also have their names listed on the exclusive, permanent list of purchasers.
This is not Muse’s first dive into the world of blockchain and NFTs. The band has previously worked with Dapper Lab’s CryptoKitties to release a collection based on their Simulation Theory album. The band’s lead singer, Matt Bellamy is also an investor in Dapper Labs.
Commenting on the pending release and Muse’s collaboration with Serenade, Warner Records UK VP of Audience and Strategy, Sebastian Simone had this to say:
“Muse have always been at the forefront of technological innovation and were one of the first music artists to pioneer in Web3 back in 2020. Their fans have an appetite for collectible rarities and this format brings them closer to Muse than ever before, propelling them into a new space and offering an entirely unique experience.”
For easy access, Serenade does not require that NFT buyers have a crypto wallet. Fans will be able to purchase the album using their debit or credit cards. Once the purchase is complete, the NFT will be transferred to a Serenade wallet automatically created when they sign up to the platform. The user can either store it there or transfer it to their wallet of choice.
“TheBblack T-shirt of NFTs”
NFT as a format – Digital Pressing – is the first new format to be added to the charts since streaming was added in 2015. NFT albums were made eligible for the charts by the Official Charts Company in April when UK rock band The Amazons released a 100-copy NFT collection of digital box sets that granted fans access to exclusive album content and a pre-order of their upcoming How Will I Know if Heaven Will Find Me? album. Since the NFTs were part of a package, the album does not meet the criteria of an “NFT Album”. This makes Muse’s upcoming album the first NFT album eligible for the charts.
Serenade founder Max Shand compares the release to the black band T-shirt that concertgoers and fans can purchase. “What a fan wants is something simple and understandable but that gives them a sense of proximity to an artist and a sense of recognition from other fans.”
In a Twitter thread today, Shand also explains the role of NFTs in the music industry and what Digital Pressings are.
