Zootopia 2 is currently crushing at the box office with an $81 million debut in the middle of this holiday week. But it’s also killing it in an entire separate category, audience acclaim. Zootopia 2’s critic scores are very solid, a 92% Rotten Tomatoes, which is great for Disney/Pixar movies, but there are many higher, given the quality of releases in this genre, from this studio.
However, Zootopia 2, with its 96% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, has just set a record and almost landed a second. As it stands, Zootopia 2 has the highest audience score for a sequel…ever, from either Disney Animation or Pixar Studios (it’s Disney Animation). Past that, it’s the second-highest ever, behind only Raya and the Last Dragon’s 97%. In third place is Onward with a 95%, and the likes of Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 4 have 94% each.
Zootopia 2
Rotten Tomatoes
It’s a stunning achievement, and while it’s possible it goes down in time, as it stands, this is where it is. I’ve listed the Rotten Tomatoes audience scores of the last decade of Disney and Pixar movies so you can get a sense of what it’s beaten.
- Zootopia 2 – 96%
- Elio – 89%
- Moana 2 – 85%
- Wish – 80%
- Inside Out 2 – 94%
- Luca – 85%
- Turning Red – 67%
- Soul – 88%
- Elemental – 93%
- Strange World – 66%
- Lightyear – 84%
- Encanto – 93%
- Raya and the Last Dragon – 97%
- Onward – 95%
- Frozen 2 – 92%
- Toy Story 4 – 94%
- Ralph Breaks the Internet – 64%
- Incredibles 2 – 84%
- Coco – 94%
- Cars 3 – 69%
- Moana – 89%
- Finding Dory – 84%
- Zootopia – 92%
- The Good Dinosaur – 64%
I can see you potentially saying, “Well, what about the true classics that were released earlier? I went further back to gather the data on those and yes, it still beats any of the ones you can think of. Though the further we go back, the less Rotten Tomatoes scores were even really a thing 20-30 years ago. But in any case, for reference:
- Toy Story – 92%
- Toy Story 2 – 87%
- Toy Story 3 -90%
- Finding Nemo – 86%
- Up – 90%
- Frozen – 85%
- Wall-E -90%
- The Lion King – 93%
- Beauty and the Beast – 94%
- The Little Mermaid – 88%
You get the idea. Many of these have critic scores above Zootopia 2, but not on the audience side. I’m not sure I put 100% stock in the opinions of fans here, as I thought Raya and the Last Dragon was fine, at best, and I flat-out didn’t like Onward at all, but the people have spoken, it seems. Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2, Encanto and Elemental make a lot more sense to me, being close to that high.
Zootopia 2 is about to instantly become one of the biggest successes of the year, and a billion-dollar box office does not seem out of reach, even in this economy, which would make it only the third to cross that mark this year. We’ll keep an eye on things from here.
