If you thought it was weird that Yellowjackets season 2 ended with nine episodes instead of ten, you’re not alone. Reportedly a tenth episode was actually filmed, and a load of content was cut from season 2, including a lot of things that would have made odd moments make sense.
Now, Yellowjackets co-creator is promising some sort of tenth bonus episode that will air ahead of season 3. Closer to the arrival of season 3, and it may not be for a while due to the Writers Strike, but supposedly this is the plan.
“There will be a bonus episode between seasons,” Lyle said on Twitter. “But I love you guys, and I don’t want y’all to lose sleep thinking it’s tonight. I’m not being coy, there’s a strike, and things are complicated!”
I’ve previously said that I personally believe that Yellowjackets just experienced the largest quality drop between seasons I can remember for a show I previously loved. I’m still unclear what happened here, but a number of interviews after season 2 aired said that a number of season 2 scenes were left on the cutting room floor, all of which seem very important, such as:
- There was going to be a storyline between Javi and Coach Ben, which may have gone more into Javi’s time away, and set up Ben going nuts on the girls after they ate Javi specifically.
- There was supposed to be a scene with Lottie and Shauna talking through their issues after Shauna used Lottie as a punching bag to get out the anger from her failed delivery.
- There was a scene where the girls invented the “who gets killed and eaten” card game, which instead inexplicably appeared out of nowhere right after the girls agreed not to eat Lottie even if she died of her injuries.
- There was going to be some backstory about who originally owned the cabin, with the owner played by Jason Ritter of Raising Dion and Parenthood fame.
But it doesn’t seem likely that a tenth episode would go back and cover those scenes which have already come and gone. The only thing on that list that seems like it might work for a bonus episode might be the Jason Ritter/original owner stuff, given that it could sort of be its own standalone story. But also I’m not sure you’d want to have an entire Yellowjackets episode without any of the Yellowjackets girls in it. We last left the girls stranded in the woods with no shelter after Coach burned the cabin. And in present day, that seemed like a pretty conclusive end to the Lottie cult camp murder reunion. But we’ll see.
I have relatively little faith in the long-term vision of the show after this season. The idea of a literal demon haunting the girls in the past and now present is not great, and the show’s pacing in season 2 was horrible. Some of those deleted scenes would have absolutely helped. We’ll hopefully hear more about this bonus episode soon, but I’m not clear what it could fix at this point, or why it exists at all.
