When Xochitl Gomez got the call that she would be playing a new character in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness she was sitting on her bedroom floor and her agent tricked her into getting on a Zoom call. From that moment, Gomez was excited to introduce her character, America Chavez, to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Gomez describes her character as a “young Latina superhero who can punch star shape portals that allow her to travel between the multiverse, which is a very crazy power.”
While speaking about the home release of Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Gomez said, “I’m just hoping that America Chavez has a role in what’s going to unfold in the next four years or so.” With big announcements from San Diego Comic-Con about the future of the MCU, Gomez is likely correct, especially since phases four, five and six of the MCU are coincidentally being called ‘The Multiverse Saga.’
During the filming of Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there were a lot of rumors about who was and wasn’t in the film flying around on the internet. Gomez, who happened to be at the right place at the right time while on set, was let into one of the film’s biggest reveals a little earlier than expected.
“One [moment] that is pretty special to me is that I got to see John Krasinski on set and I completely freaked out. I wasn’t supposed to know, no one was supposed to know, and I knew and he was on set and I literally freaked out. Like I was running around the entire lot, just running in circles. Like ‘No way. He’s here right now. Oh my god, you’re kidding. This is fake,’” said Gomez. “And then I pop onto set and he’s standing there in one of those gray suits and getting ready to film.”
A perk of being a new character in the MCU is having a presence inside Disneyland’s Avengers Campus. Just like Loki, Thor, and Black Panther, Gomez’s Chavez has made appearances inside the superhero-themed land. While it’s not actually Gomez walking around, but a very good look-alike, the thrill of being able to meet America Chavez is exciting for fans and for Gomez.
“It was just really special because not only did I get to see the whole costume again, I also saw people taking photos, and actually care, and do the same thing they would do with Falcon or Spider-Man. Especially when you play the character that people are taking photos [with], it’s just a whole other feeling,” she said.
Gomez continued that America Chavez isn’t just the story of a girl, but it’s also of a girl superhero. “It’s really important for girls of color to see themselves not only in stories, but as superheroes. People who can make things better and change the world,” she said.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available on Digital, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.
