Well that was…quick. I figured XO, Kitty, the To All the Boys I Love Before spin-off, wouldn’t last all that long on top of Netflix’s Top 10 chart, but one day? That was a bit faster than anticipated.
After climbing the charts to unseat the extremely strong Queen Charlotte, XO, Kitty has been knocked down to #2 in favor of Netflix’s returning reality series, Selling Sunset, which has now arrived with 11 episodes of season 6. It’s probably Netflix’s second most-popular reality show after Love is Blind these days, and I’m not surprised to see it rise to the top.
It’s not impossible that XO, Kitty returns to the top after people binge Selling Sunset, but I kind of doubt it. I do suspect that even with a brief flirtation with #1 that XO, Kitty has a pretty good chance of being renewed for another season. It’s A) very cheap to make and B) I think Netflix enjoys the chance to build out original IP universes, even if this is a rather strange YA romcom universe based on a movie trilogy. It’s still…something, I suppose, and between three movies and a show now, they may just want to keep it going.
SWAT, one of Netflix’s few remaining licensed shows, is at #4 now that season 5 has arrived on the service. A few non-English shows are doing well right now, Muted at #5 and La Reina del Sur at #6. For some reason I can’t quite figure out, Maid is back on the list at #9. Yes, Maid, the 2021 limited series starring Margaret Qualley. Yes, it was very good, but trying to look this up, I cannot find any news item that would indicate why the show has suddenly appeared on the list two years later. Sometimes that happens with old shows if a new season is coming up, or a spin-off has launched, but neither are true for Maid. In any case, if you haven’t watched Maid, watch it? It’s great.
Tomorrow, All American season 5 drops on Netflix, a rare licensed series that has rise to and planted itself at #1 in the past, which I would expect will happen again, and my next article will probably be about it dethroning Selling Sunset.
Past that, I am really, really looking forward to I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson season 3, which debuts on May 30, though I do not expect that to chart terribly well. But who cares! Cannot wait.
