WWE SummerSlam 2025 was a shot at a redemption for Jacob Fatu as he battled his former Bloodline brother Solo Sikoa for the United States Championship.
Just over a month ago at WWE Night of Champions, Sikoa defeated Fatu thanks to the debut of Talla Tonga to win the US title and add another member to his stable of MFTs in the process. With the expectation that Sikoa’s stablemates would once again try to interfere at SummerSlam, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis decided to make their rematch a steel cage match.
At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Sikoa attempted to keep the title mere weeks after winning it while SmackDown’s monster Fatu sought to bring the gold back home.
WWE SummerSlam 2025 Results for Solo Sikoa vs. Jacob Fatu
At WWE SummerSlam, Jacob Fatu attempted to get back his United States Championship. But he wasn’t successful.
Even with the steel cage structure designed to prevent outside interference, Sikoa’s MFTs showed up on more than one occasion in an attempt to help him win the match. In the end, that was exactly what they did. Sikoa was able to escape the cage after a flurry of assists and retain his title in cheap fashion.
Here are some of the biggest highlights of the US Championship match at WWE SummerSlam:
- After a slow start to the match and early domination by Sikoa, Fatu was able to blast Sikoa with a brutal clothesline to help even the score. Fatu then repeatedly bashed Sikoa into the steel cage face-first.
- Fatu was then sent into the cage by Fatu but bounced right off and mounted some offense, hitting a DDT and a moonsault followed by another one. That only got two.
- It also brought out Sikoa’s MFTs Tonga Loa and JC Mateo before Jimmy Uso came out to even the score. Uso quickly blasted both Loa and Mateo with superkicks, then Talla Tonga showed up to take out Uso.
- Instead of escaping the cage when he had the opportunity, Fatu slammed the cage shut and walked right into a Samoan Spike for a very close two-count.
- Sikoa climbed to the top of the cage, and Fatu followed, dragging Sikoa back down to the top rope as Mateo and Loa scaled the cage on the outside. Tonga followed suit and was able to handcuff Fatu to the top of the cage.
- That nearly allowed Sikoa to crawl out of the ring, but Fatu busted out of the handcuffs and kicked the steel cage door into the face of Mateo. Sikoa tried to escape again, and as Fatu went to grab him, Tonga hit a big boot on the door, which hit Fatu in the face. Sikoa rolled out of the cage for the win.
After the match, Uso helped attack Sikoa’s MFTs and Fatu hit a picturesque moonsault off the top of the cage onto Loa and Mateo, getting some momentum back after a controversial defeat.
WWE SummerSlam 2025 Results: What’s Next for Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu?
WWE had a tough choice at SummerSlam: either revert back to Fatu as champion, or stick with Sikoa as its midcard title holder.
Truth be told, neither outcome would have been a bad choice. WWE fans don’t really but into Sikoa as a world champion or main eventer, so he’s right where he should be in the upper midcard as SmackDown’s US Champion. Fatu, of course, is a different story.
“The Samoan Werewolf” is the closest thing to being WWE’s next breakout performer, and it would be, well, downright shocking if he doesn’t become a world champion by 2026. There is no need to rush him to that spot, though. Cody Rhodes is likely leaving WWE SummerSlam as champion, which means that Fatu isn’t getting that gold anytime soon.
Thus, it’s wise of WWE to book Fatu similarly to Gunther, giving him a protected upper midcard push before that world title push comes. After his tainted loss to Sikoa at SummerSlam, Fatu is going to have to get his win back at some point, suggesting that a third and final rubber match is on its way.
Whenever that takes place, perhaps at Clash in Paris or an upcoming episode of SmackDown, Fatu should end this feud with Sikoa and move on to something else. Fatu surely isn’t going to let Sikoa get away with beating him at SummerSlam, so that event likely won’t mark the end of their rivalry. WWE just needs to ensure that Fatu gets his win back without being saddled with the US title.
AtWWE SummerSlam, the creative team did all it could to keep Fatu looking strong in defeat. The next step? A win for Fatu before moving on for good.
