World Track And Field Body Restricts Transgender Women From Women’s Sports

Topline

World Athletics—an international governing body that oversees track & field and other forms of running—is barring many transgender women from competing in the female category, the organization announced Thursday, as restrictions against trans athletes competing in sports that align with their gender identity are becoming increasingly common.

Key Facts

Transgender women who have been through male puberty will not be able to compete in female events starting March 31, the World Athletics Council announced Thursday.

Across all international events, athletes with differences of sex development—or congenital conditions that can cause atypical sex development—will have to reduce their testosterone levels below 2.5 nanomoles per liter for at least two years in order to compete, World Athletics said, imposing more strict regulations than the organization had previously.

No transgender athletes are currently competing in international contests, the World Athletics Council said.

The council said it was prioritizing fairness and “the integrity of the female competition” over inclusion, but it set up a working group to study how to include transgender women in the future.
