Poland’s Iga Świątek continued her domination of the women’s tour by winning her 34th straight match, 6-2, 6-1, over Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in the Roland Garros semifinals on Thursday.
Świątek will meet either American Coco Gauff or Italian Martina Trevisan in Saturday’s championship as she seeks her second French Open (2020) and second major title. She is 2-0 against Gauff and 2-1 versus Trevisan.
“She is on fire, what could stop her?” Tennis Channel analyst Pam Shriver asked on air.
Świątek tied Serena Williams for the second-longest winning streak this century, and if she wins Saturday she will tie Venus Williams’ mark of 35 set in 2000.
Martina Navratilova owns the longest winning streak among women of the Open Era, winning 74 consecutive matches in 1984.
Świątek closed it out on her serve at love, winning the match with an ace before clenching her fist to the crowd and embracing Kasatkina at net.
Gauff, the 18-year-old American, will attempt to reach her first major final against Trevisan in the second match.
The winner of the tournament will earn $2,355,343, while the runner-up takes home $1,177,931.
