It’s been a while since I started one of these out with a ‘happened on this day’ bit, so let’s see . . . what interesting or terrible things happened on September 27th throughout history?
Some pretty fascinating stuff, actually, such as:
- William, duke of Normandy, set sail across the English Channel on this day in 1066, in what would later be dubbed the Norman Conquest of England. The Normans—a French people with a good deal of Viking mixed in—conquered England entirely. In George R.R. Martin’s fiction, Aegon the Conqueror is based loosely on William. Like William, Aegon not only conquered Westeros but changed its cultural and political makeup forever. In England, French became the de facto language of the elite and governing class for hundreds of years.
- In 1840, the famous American political caricaturist Thomas Nast was born in Bavaria (he would die 62 years later in Ecuador). A fierce opponent of slavery, Nast drew many cartoons lampooning the South and the Democratic Party as vicious racists and oppressors:
Other September 27th birthdays include:
- Lil Wayne in 1982
- Gwyneth Paltrow in 1972
- Marc Maron in 1963
- Samuel Adams in 1722
- Louis XIII in 1601
In 1590, Pope Urban VII died—just 12 days after being elected, the shortest of any Pope in history.
Alright, enough trivia. Let’s Wordle!
Today’s Wordle Answer, Hint & Clue
The Warning: AAARGHH MATEYS, THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Hint: Soup makes crunchy ____.
The Clue: There’s a double letter in this word.
The Answer:
This was another one of those bad luck turned good Wordles for me. Cruel ended up being quite cruel indeed, leaving me with a whopping 629 possible solutions. Ouch.
Thankfully, Spain actually worked (I wasn’t sure it would, and Wordle Bot actually told me I had a good vocabulary for this one, which is odd). That brought my options down to lucky number 13.
At this point, only ‘O’ remained from the vowels, though whenever I’m left with just one vowel I consider the possibility of a ‘Y’. With a green ‘S’ I decided to think of a word with ‘O’ in the middle and ‘Y’ at the end and the first one that came to mind was soggy. I figured it was a risk going for a double letter like that but hey, why not? At least I could see if the vowels were in the right spot.
Much to my surprise, it was the right word! Talk about a lucky guess—though, to be fair, I had some reasoning and logic behind it.
I hope you’re having a fantabulous and joy-inspiring week so far, dearest Wordlers. Be excellent to each other!
