With the World Cup less than six months away, now is a great time to start making those all-important hotel reservations. Doha is in the midst of a hotel boom and is planning to open approximately 100 new hotels and residences in anticipation of swarms of soccer-loving fans and their families and friends. However, for a true luxury experience, one of my favorites remains the Mandarin Oriental, where a guest’s every need is met with perfect execution and a warm smile. Below are just a few of the reasons that the Mandarin Oriental is a perfect place to enjoy the games and Doha’s numerous other attractions. (For a list of other great activities, see my Doha story.)
Perfectly indulgent rooms
If you are staying in a deluxe room or the royal suite, expect to be pampered in a beautifully designed accommodation complete with high-tech features and the most comfortable of beds. Rooms are large, boast floor to ceiling windows and extremely luxurious bathrooms. The larger suites have spacious outdoor terraces, living and dining rooms, a study and an entertainment room. Large groups or those who like to spread out and enjoy their privacy can choose from one of the residences. The penthouse includes four bedrooms, panoramic city views and over 5,500 sq. feet of luxury to enjoy.
Some of the best food in town
Doha is very much an international city and the Mandarin Oriental has a host of restaurants featuring multiple cuisines. Mosaic has the most elaborate and delicious breakfast buffets and is the perfect way to start your day whether you are craving a mezze platter, Chinese fried rice, a potato dosa or berry pancakes with a fresh coconut juice. Izu serves a Mediterranean-inspired menu and features incredibly delicious versions of rigatoni with truffles, grilled prawns with garlic and rosemary or Wagyu rib-eye. If you fancy something Asian, stop by Liang for authentic Chinese cuisine and indulge in Peking duck, Kung Pao tiger prawns and some deep-fried ice cream. And you can satisfy your sweet tooth at the Mandarin Cake Shop or the Gelato bar.
A superb gym and spa
Traveling can be stressful and the best antidote is an afternoon at the Mandarin Oriental Spa which will sooth you with a host of unique treatments. Harmony of Pearls begins with a foot ritual that includes pearl powder and frankincense, a relaxing exfoliation, a massage featuring argan oil and a facial using rose extracts. The Singing Sand Dunes combines the healing power of Himalayan singing bowls, a pivoting quartz sand bed and a full body massage. Couples can choose a VIP suite that has its own private sauna, steam shower and a relaxation area. If you feel the need to work-out, you will not be disappointed by the very well-equipped gym. Excellent private trainers are on hand to enhance your exercise routine.
The best concierge in town
If you can’t decide how to spend your free time, a quick call to the concierge can help. The property is happy to arrange a host of personalized excursions that feature adventure, arts & culture, sustainability, and cooking, among others. This is your chance to enjoy kayaking among the mangroves, a helicopter tour of Doha, a golf excursion, a desert safari or a romantic dinner by a desert campfire, catered by the hotel.
Fabulous outdoor pools
Since you are in Doha, you should take the opportunity to enjoy the glorious sunshine and plan on spending a bit of time by one of the outdoor pools. The perfectly serene rooftop is a great place to relax in the temperature controlled pools, complete with private cabanas and lounge chairs. The excellent staff will be happy to serve you the drink of your choice and there is also a certified Learn-to Swim program, available.
