ABC has greenlit the procedural crime drama Will Trent for a second season, with an unspecified number of new episodes ordered. The pickup comes two weeks before its freshman season finale on Tuesday, May 2.
Based on the series of Will Trent novels by Karin Slaughter, the series stars Ramón Rodríguez in the title role, a Special Agent in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) who has an eye for observational detail despite being dyslexic.
“We’re so thankful to our ABC and Hulu fans for joining us on this wild ride and watching Will Trent, said Ramón Rodríguez in a statement. “When we set out to bring the series to television screens, we wanted to do justice to the gritty, thrilling world that Karin Slaughter created with her bestselling book series. Liz Heldens, Dan Thomsen and the creative team have developed complex and nuanced characters that people are relating to on a human level. We’re so excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into these stories with season two.”
The news of the Will Trent renewal follows the sixth season order by ABC for The Rookie starring Nathan Fillion. Previously, the alphabet net announced renewals for the 2023-24 season for sophomore sitcom Abbott Elementary and veteran Grey’s Anatomy. Two additional freshman ABC dramas, Alaska Daily and The Rookie: Feds, are waiting news on their futures, if any.
ABC is expected to officially announce its fall 2023 primetime schedule on Tuesday, May 16.
