In anticipation of Season 3, Louisa Jacobson told viewers to expect “a lot of plot twists.” “It’s going to keep you on your toes,” the actress told People, and she wasn’t lying. One of the biggest twists in Season 3 came in Episode 6 with the surprise death of John Adams, who was struck by a speeding horse carriage moments after sharing one last romantic moment with Oscar.

Creator Julian Fellowes told TV Insider that Adams’ death was essential in order to move Oscar’s storyline forward, adding that they were “quite careful to kill him with a straight accident, not with anything with political overtones. He’s just killed in an accident, like anyone could be at any time.”

Will There Be The Gilded Age Season 4?

Yes, HBO announced on July 28, 2025, that the series had been renewed for a fourth season, a few episodes before the Season 3 finale.

The renewal comes as HBO reports that total premiere-night viewing for Season 3 has increased for five consecutive weeks, resulting in a 20 percent growth over last season. Fan engagement has also risen, with social chatter rising nearly 60 percent week over week.

Additionally, the third season has received the most critical acclaim than the previous two seasons. Variety’s TV critic Alison Herman called it “the best season yet,” adding that it “recalibrates The Gilded Age into a show that’s more dramatic in some areas and more lighthearted in others than it’s been in the past.”

“We couldn’t be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights The Gilded Age has achieved this season,” Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement. “Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a “cant-miss it” entertainment experience from week to week, and we’re delighted to continue exploring these characters’ grand ambitions for what we promise will be a thrilling fourth season.”

What Will The Gilded Age Season 4 Be About?

The plot details for The Gilded Age Season 4 are under wraps. Fellowes said in a recent interview with TV Insider that he doesn’t have a plan for further seasons of the show, but said that the job is to “reinvent” the series every season.

“But each time you have to reinvent the show in order to give it a new dynamic to fit its new proportions. And I think that is part of our job,” he explained. “That’s part of what you do if you write a series for television. So in a sense, each [season] has to have a satisfactory conclusion given what’s taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to, and that is the sort of double discipline that we write to really.”
