Will There Be A ‘Superman 2’? Everything To Know About The Sequel And TV Spinoffs

James Gunn’s Superman soared into theaters on July 11 and has already become one of the biggest theatrical releases of 2025. The success of the DC Universe’s first feature film is a promising start for the franchise and the future of Superman, with the potential for sequels and TV spinoffs.

Directed and based on a screenplay by Gunn, David Corenswet plays Superman (aka Kal-El and Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent). Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced also star in the remake based on the iconic DC comic book characters.

Superman has grossed $122 million domestically during its first weekend, making it the year’s third-largest opening in the U.S. after A Minecraft Movie ($162 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million). These are ideally strong kickoff numbers for a major film production that took $225 million to make and roughly $100 million to promote, according to Variety.

ForbesWhen Is ‘Superman’ Coming To Streaming? Here’s The Likely Release Timeline

The film, which is not an origin story, follows Superman as billionaire Lex Luthor tries to turn public opinion against him. “When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good,” the synopsis reads. “Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?”

Superman boasts two end-credit scenes, but they don’t tease future storylines or introduce new characters, as superhero titles typically do (especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). However, with the introduction of Supergirl and the film’s ongoing box office and critical success, what could be in store for the Superman world next?

Will There Be A Superman 2?

While DC Studios has yet to confirm another Superman movie, director James Gunn revealed that he’s working on the follow-up to the film. However, the co-CEO was hesitant to label the future project a “sequel.”

“What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly.

While details about the next major Superman project are under wraps, there could also be two Superman TV spinoffs in the works soon. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Gunn is considering spinoffs for Superman characters such as Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (portrayed by Skyler Gisondo).

The report comes after Gunn and fellow DC Studios head Peter Safran revealed plans to increase the DC Universe’s output in their overhaul of the failing DC Extended Universe (DCEU). They want to release two live-action films and one animated film per year, as well as two live-action and two animated TV series per year for Max, Safran confirmed to ScreenRant.

How Is Superman Connected To The Upcoming Supergirl Film?

The next film in the DCU is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is slated to premiere in June 2026. Fans were introduced to Superman’s cousin, Supergirl (Milly Alcock), in the final minutes of the movie. After Clark returns to the Fortress of Solitude, there’s a large crash and a very inebriated Kara Zor-El comes plummeting through the wall. Krypto runs over to Supergirl, as Krypto is actually her dog.

Based on the comic series of the same name, in Woman of Tomorrow, Supergirl is celebrating her 21st birthday aboard a spaceship with Krypto. She’s then approached by a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, whose father was brutally murdered. The girl, seeking revenge, asks for Supergirl’s help to track down the killer.

While Superman helps set up his cousin’s intro, Gunn told EW that you don’t have to watch Superman to enjoy Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. “I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they’re missing information,” he said.

So, will Superman make a cameo in the upcoming Supergirl movie? The Wrap reported that Clark Kent will briefly drop in on next year’s film. But as for when we’ll see another Superman film, it will likely be a while.

Gunn said in a recent interview that it will be “a couple years” until fans see the Man of Steel again on the big screen. But then he doubled back and said that viewers actually will see the character before then (likely in Supergirl). Stay tuned for more updates.
