NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JULY 16: Lola Tung attends “The Summer I Turned Pretty” Season 3 New York … More
The director of I Know What You Did Last Summer is explaining why The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story didn’t make the final cut of the film.
Starring Madelyn Cline, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, I Know What You Did Last Summer is a legacy sequel set nearly 30 years after the 1997 hit slasher movie of the same name.
In the film, a group of friends responsible for the accidental death of a motorist covers up the crime, only to be haunted by a demented fisherman wearing a slicker and wielding a giant hook.
Tung and Chavez were cast in supporting roles in I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was released in theaters on July 18, but didn’t appear in the film’s final cut.
In a recent interview with People, I Know What You Did Last Summer director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson explained why the scene featuring Tung and Chavez— which was supposed to be featured at the beginning of the film— hit the cutting room floor.
“In every movie, it’s best laid plans, and then you edit the movie and you put it together and you go, ‘I love this in a vacuum. This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie,'” Robinson told People.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson Praised Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s Performances
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told People that she was impressed with Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s performances in I Know What You Did Last Summer, which made the decision to cut their scene from the film all the more difficult.
“It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas — they are both so fantastic,” the filmmaker told People. “I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job. But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.
“It sucks because you don’t want to do that to those actors,” Robinson added. “And it sucks when you love something as a scene, but that scene just doesn’t work in the final cut of the film.”
Rated R, I Know What You Did Last Summer is new in theaters.
