Nate Diaz didn’t say he was done in the UFC after he submitted Tony Ferguson last month, but the money appears to be coming elsewhere in his near future. Diaz’s TKO victory was his last fight left on his current contract with the only organization he’s known throughout his mixed martial arts career.
Now, get ready for Diaz to test waters outside the UFC, including his own venture named Real Fight Inc. And don’t be surprised if one of the fights under this new umbrella eventually includes a “mega-fight” against YouTuber Jake Paul, who is making his own waves in the fight game.
In the boxing realm, money-grab opportunities are becoming much more mainstream. It all began when Floyd Mayweather moved to 50-0 after defeating Conor McGregor. Ever since, it’s become a yearly tradition to see similar matchups. Why can’t Diaz versus Paul eventually cross that threshold in 2023?
Diaz’s immense draw in the UFC fell right below McGregor’s success hat propelled the company to a completely different stratosphere. The Stockton, California native’s brash attitude, no filter and all-out aggression in the octagon is what makes him a pseudo-folk hero within the sport.
Although it may draw mixed reviews, there’s no denying the box office draw that would occur from a potential Diaz vs. Paul boxing match. If Paul takes care of business against former UFC legend Anderson Silva next month in Arizona, it sets up all the momentum for this to eventually become reality.
Diaz wants another massive payday. Outside of a long-awaited trilogy with McGregor, foraying into boxing against Paul feels like Diaz’s best bet for the biggest possible purse of cash.
