The company applied for renewal of its permit is yet to be decided by authority due to several reasons
Bitcoin mining company Greenidge applied for its permit renewal, but the authority has delayed it. On Thursday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that the authority would state the new proposal regarding mitigation measures about greenhouse gas emissions in a letter by Greenidge on 25th March. Following the same, DEC pushed the decision till 30th June.
Previously, New York DEC told the crypto mining firm, Greenidge, that more steps were needed to meet the requirements set by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) of New York that was signed into law way back in 2019.
In the recent letter sent by Greenidge to the authority, the crypto mining firm proposed the addition of two limitations to the permit. The first limitation would be a reduction of approx 40% from its current level of permitted greenhouse gas emission of its facility in Dresden by the end of 2025. Second, it stated a requirement to be a facility with zero carbon-emitting power generation by 2035.

Crypto mining firm mentioned that it is already compelling with the CLCPA, and it argues that if there were a denial based on emissions standards, it would be defying logic. It would be so because GHG emissions cater for the limits mentioned in the CLCPA and would only need to be achieved sometime after the expiration of the new permit.
As the company puts it, its Dresden facility has a 106 MW compatibility that makes up only a fraction of the electricity that generates in New York. Further, it stated that it had also reduced the combined upstream of the plant and onsite emission of greenhouse gases by approximately 70% when it was compared to the baseline set in 1990 in the CLCPA.
In his first review of the letter, a professor at Cornell University, Anthony Ingraffea, said that he has no idea how the company could reduce their carbon dioxide emission by below 40% of its current permit even without seeing the details.
Further, he said that it’s important for the company to have a clear roadmap about when and how it is going to achieve its plans. Last year Anthony also testified during a public hearing on mining and climate change at the State Assembly.
