The Walking Dead has walked themselves into a pretty bizarre situation. We are heading toward the series finale of the main show, and while that usually mean that no character is off limits to die in a series like this (just ask Game of Thrones, which slaughtered half its cast), The Walking Dead has to play things differently.
Because of its announced spin-offs, The Walking Dead cannot kill a number of major characters that may otherwise could have possibly been killed in the last season here. That includes:
Maggie and Negan – Who will be traveling to Manhattan together for Dead City
Daryl and Carol – Yes, I know Carol dropped out of Daryl’s France-based show, but heavily implications are that she will still be involved in that storyline or future ones past the end of this series.
Rick and Michonne – Not that these two are even around any more, but Rick did die here in the comics, and I expect him to show up for at least a cameo.
That leaves a number of “at risk” characters that may be one of the final sacrifices the show makes. And I’ll put odds on a few of them here:
Rosita (2:1) – She seems like she’s on a path to sacrifice anything for her daughter, and with Christian Serratos already having her next project lined up after this, I don’t think Rosita needs to be kept alive for any other future unannounced spin-off. Plus, Rosita was already supposed to die with her head on a pike during the Whisperer run.
Eugene (5:1) – Sure, he’s about to be executed for murder within the Commonwealth, but considering the plotline of this final arc is about saving him and overthrowing Pamela Milton, it seems unlikely he’s actually die.
Father Gabriel (3:1) – It does seem like a good bookend for Father Gabriel’s redemption arc would be to sacrifice himself bravely, perhaps to save his daughter or Rosita herself.
Aaron (6:1) – I just don’t see a reason to kill Aaron. I would also watch an Aaron spin-off, as Ross Marquand is great. Keep him alive.
Princess, Yumiko, Connie, Kelly, Jerry, Magna (10:1) – I don’t think it would make sense to kill off anyone in this little club. They’re too new, and it wouldn’t have the impact as killing off a longer-running character.
Ezekiel (2:1) – I am pretty concerned for Ezekiel here as he seems like he’s constantly on the verge of death, first surviving his comic fate on a pike, then from cancer, but now? I can see him putting his life on the line for his friends. And his death would make an impact, similar to Rosita’s.
The Kids (20:1) – Just cannot see any of the Youths being killed off, which includes Lydia, Judith, RJ, Herschel and Coco. This ain’t season 2 with Sophia’s death. Cannot see them ending on a note that dark.
So yes, if I had to pick, it’s either Ezekiel or Rosita. We only have a few more episodes to find out, including tonight’s. Stay tuned.
