Brighton know how to use the transfer market better than most clubs. Indeed, the Seagulls have made an industry of signing undervaluing players, developing them and selling them on for significant transfer fees – see Marc Cucurella, Ben White, Yves Bissouma and Leandro Trossard. Alexis Mac Allister is seemingly next in line.
Signed for just €8m from Argentinos Juniors in 2019, Mac Allister is now a key figure for Brighton. He is also a World Cup winner after helping Argentina to glory in Qatar last winter. Mac Allister’s contribution was notable and alerted several elite level clubs to the potential of the 24-year-old midfielder.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with many reports stating Brighton will sell Mac Allister for the right price at the end of the season. All three clubs would undoubtedly be strengthened by the addition of the Argentine international, but which team would be the best fit for Mac Allister?
There is most uncertainty around Chelsea at this moment in time with the Blues still searching for a new permanent manager after the sacking of Graham Potter. It is therefore difficult to envisage how Mac Allister would fit into their team without any knowledge of which system or approach will be used next season. Julian Nagelsmann, for example, would use a different style to Mauricio Pochettino or Luis Enrique.
Liverpool have suffered a challenging 2022/23 season, but they still have a clear identity under Jurgen Klopp. The Reds will almost certainly replenish their midfield this summer and Mac Allister could be an important part of that rebuild. His technical ability and versatility would surely appeal to Klopp.
Manchester United are also expected to be active in the summer transfer window to accelerate their development under Erik Ten Hag. The Dutchman has used a trio of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in midfield and Mac Allister would compete for a starting spot should he join the Old Trafford outfit.
Brighton will drive a hard bargain for one of their prize assets – recent reports claim the south coast club wants at least £50m – but Mac Allister is in the rare position of being able to choose between a number of different options. The decision he makes this summer must be a considered and smart one. At 24, Mac Allister could have a long career at the top level to look forward to.
