While you may have expected that a number of now-dead actors on Wednesday would not return for season 2, it was a bit of a surprise for some that romantic interest and psychic painter Xavier Thorpe suddenly disappeared from the series after his prominent role in season 1.
The show tends to explain away real world developments that have happened which affect the series, like the fact that Pugsly is now two feet taller, which was a development over the two year break (“He really shot up over the summer!” Morticia says). But they also had a rationale for why Xavier was gone.
The show explained that Xavier’s father, Vincent Thorpe, was not amused that his son had been falsely accused of murder, and pulled his son out of school to send him to a different academy elsewhere. The move also left Nevermore in dire financial straits, given his endowment, which is now a major plot point of the season.
Xavier does show up by proxy, sending Wednesday another future-predicting painting of crows he believes is connected to her, and that is the central mystery of the season, who’s controlling those birds and murdering various people with them.
So, this was just a plot decision? They were just done with his character?
Not really. This situation arose when actor Percy Hynes White was accused of sexual harassment on social media, a claim he vehemently denied, and the accusatory posts were deleted.
“Somebody I’ve never met started a campaign of misinformation against me online,” White said Instagram in June 2023. “Because of this, my family has been doxxed, and my friends have received death threats.” The rumors are false. I can’t accept the portrayal of me as someone bigoted or criminally negligent of people’s safety. These are the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims.”
Later, he said kind things about the show and his time there, saying he had fun and he was looking forward to season 2. Still, losing a major role on Netflix’s second-biggest series ever is an enormous blow. Interestingly, Hynes recently starred with Jenna Ortega in 2024’s Winter Spring Summer or Fall, again, playing her love interest. He’s found relatively steady work since Wednesday.
Whatever the case, Hynes and Xavier are gone. Previously, Ortega said that she didn’t really want to pursue any romantic plotlines for Wednesday going forward, as season 1’s love triangle felt like it went against who her character was. So maybe he didn’t fit in with that either, and season 2 has not introduced any new love interests for her (only Enid).
It’s not impossible we could see Xavier again in the future, as who knows how many seasons Wednesday will run, and they may decide it’s appropriate for him to return. But he’s gone for now, and that’s why.
