It’s the final weekend of spring, and a pretty major weekend for new streaming content, especially on Netflix. From zombies to creepy sci-fi stories to action movies, here’s everything new to stream on all your favorite streaming services.
Each weekend I post this guide, and include both brand new stuff and shows that are currently airing that I’m covering or tuned into. Some of my favorite shows of the year have come to an end, like Succession and Barry, but others continue, like MGM’s excellent From.
Let’s dive right in!
New This Weekend
The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC)
AMC is doing its level best to make sure we never go a week without new Walking Dead content, for better or worse. The same night that Fear The Walking Dead’s midseason finale airs, the new Maggie/Negan spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City airs its series premiere. Reviews are pretty solid so far. Look for mine tomorrow here on this blog.
Black Mirror Season 6 (Netflix)
I admit, I’ve had mixed feelings about Black Mirror over the years, and am far from a massive fan or aficionado. I think the very first episode of the series actually kind of turned me off to the whole thing. I haven’t seen the new season yet, but it’s the kind of show that’s nice because you can just watch one episode and get a complete story, since each episode is self-contained. No doubt, it almost always makes you think (and sometimes shudder in horror).
Extraction 2 (Netflix)
I’ll be honest, it’s been a while since I saw Chris Hemsworth’s enjoyable action-thriller, Extraction, but I could have sworn he died at the end of that movie. Turns out, he was only mostly dead. That’s a good thing, as this one is faring even better with critics and audiences. Fun for a lazy weekend evening, in any case.
Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King (Netflix)
I know next to nothing about this manga / anime series but the movie looks like fun for fans of the genre and it’s one of the best-reviewed movies of the year, at least with audiences. Apparently it hasn’t been reviewed by critics at all, at least on Rotten Tomatoes.
Outlander Season 7 (Starz)
I am a both a fan and a detractor of Outlander on Starz. The series is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, who is from my home town, and deals with Scottish history, which is right up my alley. I like the characters and actors and music and costumes and the stories, while often outlandish, are exciting and romantic. There is just . . . so much icky, rapey stuff. Season 5 ended with a scene that made me walk away from the show entirely and I still haven’t seen Season 6, though I will go back to it eventually. Suffice to say, I am behind and won’t be watching Season 7 yet. How was the last season, by the way? Am I an idiot to take a break? (The other show I had to take a break from was The Handmaid’s Tale, which is just too relentlessly bleak).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 (Paramount+)
Speaking of shows I’m behind on, that everyone tells me I need to watch, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds really needs to get bumped to the top of my list. I really meant to watch Season 1 before Season 2 came out and here I am, a whole season behind. Maybe I can binge this one and get to Season 2 before too long!
Chevalier (Hulu)
A historical drama that tells the true story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner during the reign of Marie Antoinette. Being a black man in 18th century France high society was clearly not easy. Revolution, music, romance. This one has it all.
Recurring / Recent Streaming Content
From (MGM+)
We’re down to the final two episodes of From’s second season on MGM+ and things are getting really, really good. Unlike the massive disappointment that Yellowjackets ended up being, From has managed to keep its story moving forward and the overall vibe of the show remains the same as Season 1. Yes, a few episodes earlier in the season spun their wheels and it has had a couple egregious slipups, but the last few have been great and I can’t wait for Sunday’s penultimate episode!
The Great (Hulu)
Recently added to Hulu, I’m tossing this lovely, hilarious black comedy back into this list as a reminder to myself that I still haven’t started Season 3 yet. I need to! The story of Catherine the Great of Russia and the hapless foodie psychopath, Emperor Peter, is just too much fun to wait on!
Silo (Apple TV)
I finally started Silo on Apple TV and . . . two episodes in I’m not feeling it at all. I really, really did not like the first two episodes and found it all very odd and off-putting. But I hear it gets good at Episode 3, so I’ll be watching that soon to see if it changes my mind. I know many readers have urged me to watch this one, so I was a little disappointed at how weak the two-part premiere was. We shall see.
Fear The Walking Dead Season 8 (AMC)
Of course, nothing can compare to the utter dreadfulness that is Fear The Walking Dead. The final season is a complete disaster, and the final episode of the first half of Season 8 is among the worst this show has ever aired. My review is forthcoming.
