Topline
1994 box-office hit True Lies has come to the small-screen in a CBS television reboot—here’s a rundown of who starred in the original movie and the new actors bringing the characters to life nearly 30 years later.
Key Facts
The show True Lies, which debuted on March 1, reprises characters from the 1994 movie of the same name.
True Lies (1994) was directed by James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar) and stars Jame Lee Curtis, whose performance as Helen Tasker, a housewife who discovers her husband Harry (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is secretly a spy, secured her a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Performance By a Female Actor In A Supporting Role.
The movie was also nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA for Best Effects.
Characters
Steve Howey (Reba, Shameless) reprises Schwarzenegger’s Harry Tasker, an apparently mild-mannered family man secretly moonlighting as a spy.
Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) plays Harry’s wife Helen Trask, originally played by Jamie Lee Curtis, who discovers Harry’s secret life as a spy and starts joining him on missions.
Annabella Didion (Outer Banks) plays Dana Trask, Harry and Helen’s daughter who was played by Eliza Dushku (Bring It On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) in the 1994 film.
Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation, A Streetcar Named Desire) directs Harry Trask’s spy agency as Susan Trisby, a twist on the movie’sSpencer Trisby, played by Charlton Heston (Ben-Hur 1959, Planet of the Apes 1968)
Omar Miller (8 Mile, Miracle at St. Anna) joins Harry and Helen as fellow spy Albert “Gib” Gibson, originally played by Tom Arnold (McHale’s Navy, Exit Wounds).
Erica Hernandez (Bridge and Tunnel) and Mike O’Gorman (Tiny Apartment, Net_Work) play brand new characters Maria Ruiz and Luther Tenet, spies and ex-lovers who work with Harry, Helen and “Gib”.
Surprising Fact
Despite Cameron’s involvement as executive producer, the television reboot scored poorly with critics—41% on Rotten Tomatoes, 49% on Metacritic, and 5.2 out of 10 on IMDb—who generally found the adaptation boring.
