TOPSHOT – Ferrari’s Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc drives during the third practice session of … More
Formula 1 heads to Monte Carlo this weekend for the Monaco Grand Prix and the second leg of the European triple header from May 23-25.
So far this season, only one team has managed to break the Papaya’s dominant run, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen grabbing the only two non-McLaren victories in Japan and Imola.
The Dutchman pulled off a stunning performance last time out at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, having executed an audacious move on the very first lap, overtaking pole-sitter Oscar Piastri around the outside of the first chicane. He then controlled the race all the way to the checkered flag, scoring his second win of the season ahead of Lando Norris and Piastri.
That victory puts the reigning champion at 124 points in the driver standings where he is sitting in third, sandwiched between the two McLarens.
Piastri still leads the championship with 146 points, while Norris isn’t far behind with 133 points – 13 points down from his teammate and just nine points ahead of Verstappen.
Now it’s on to Monaco where qualifying pretty much decides the race as the narrow streets of Monte Carlo make overtaking nearly impossible.
Last year, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finally got his long-awaited win in front of his home crowd from pole position, with the remaining nine drivers in the top ten finishing the race in the exact same order as they started.
This shows just how difficult it is to pull off passes on this tight circuit, which is why F1 officials have recently mandated that drivers make at least two pit stops at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Drivers will be required to use at least three sets of tires during the race, and the two pit stops rule will still apply in the event of a wet grand prix.
