Sony announced an unprecedented price-hike for the PlayStation 5 console today, in a move that has gamers scratching their heads in disbelief.
It’s almost unheard of for a video game console to get a price increase, but Sony chocks up the price hike to supply chain and production issues still wreaking havoc on supply in large part due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as ongoing inflationary pressures.
“We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries,” the company informs us in a blog post. “Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada.”
The United States appears to be the one region exempt from the PS5 price increase.
Here’s what a PlayStation 5 console—whether Blu-Ray or Digital Edition—will cost you in your territory now:
Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99

- PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)

Canada

Post-launch price-hikes may become more common. Recently Meta (Facebook) announced a price increase for the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. It’s a great VR headset but a price increase was not what anyone was expecting.
Likewise, an increase to the price of a PS5, when it’s already been a struggle to find one in the first place, makes sense from Sony’s perspective but may not go over so well with gamers.
Hey, there’s always the Xbox Series X|S . . . .
