‘Wednesday’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

For being one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time in its first two weeks, I’m a little surprised that Wednesday did not extend its #1 time even further than this. But yes, a new show has come along to knock it off the top spot in Netflix’s top 10 list, though if you see which show it is, you might understand why.

Wednesday has been dethroned by Harry and Megan, the limited documentary series chronicling the life of the Prince and the actress-turned-Duchess, who have left the royal family behind and have been mostly living in America.

The show is less trash-talking the royal family than it is explaining how they met and fell in love. If they’re outright hostile to anyone, it’s the tabloid press who effectively chased them out of their home country. But the point being, many, many people are tuning in for an unprecedented look at the couple in their own words, and already the show has sparked controversy back home in England, as you would expect it to. It’s just three episodes, around three hours in total, so a breezy watch. As such, I would not expect it to retain this #1 slot for very long once people finish watching.

As for Wednesday, it continues its march toward possibly being Netflix’s most-watched English language show ever. It’s on the verge of passing up Dahmer and may end up possibly getting more viewership than Stranger Things season 4 did its first month, which would be absolutely wild.

The question now is not if Netflix will announce a season 2 for Wednesday, but when, and whether it will be just one season they greenlight, or multiple ones, which has happened in the past with some of their most successful offerings. Behind the scenes, I imagine there are some intense negotiations about contracts and paychecks going on, given the insane success the series has seen, bringing Tim Burton back into the limelight and elevating start Jenna Ortega to superstardom.

If Harry and Megan does well enough, as it appears like it’s going to, I do wonder if Netflix will continue to partner with the couple on future projects. Netflix has taken to doing deals with high profile figures like these royals and Barack Obama in the past, and this time, that seems to be paying off in spades. We’ll have to see what viewership ends up being for this program in its opening week here.
