Video game trailers often use questionable song choices. Or sometimes good songs that are weirdly integrated into the trailer—like The Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings in the Modern Warfare II / Warzone 2 trailer earlier this year. Great song, poor implementation into the trailer.
But I can say with confidence that the use of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird in this Warzone 2 is actually a thing of perfection (as far as video game trailers go, that is). It’s timed perfectly from the opening notes, too, the vocals kicking in at the exact moment the Operator leaps out of the helicopter.
It’s just the right level of drama and rock and roll, and they’ve cut the song down to the exact right parts to accompany the action. This is how you make a video game trailer. It shows off the gameplay, the map, the new mechanics, the vehicles, the guns, the explosions, all the action. It’s way over-the-top and it looks like wicked fun. If this doesn’t hype you for Warzone 2 nothing will.
I’m also impressed by the innovation and gameplay changes here. In just two-and-a-half years, this game has evolved and changed up its formula far more than most of the competition. I just wish it was launching with some smaller maps also.
I’ve been playing Modern Warfare II pretty much daily since it launched on October 28th and will have a full review of the game after Season 1 kicks off alongside Warzone 2, with a Warzone 2 review to follow. Hopefully they release a Resurgence Mode on the Al Mazrah map before too long, however, as we all know Resurgence > Battle Royale—and it’s not even close.
