Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters today. The long-awaited sequel to Black Panther has generated a lot of buzz and a lot of speculation. The biggest question, of course, has been: How will the franchise move forward without the star of the first film? Actor Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away in 2020 after a fight against cancer.
Another question filmgoers may have—and one less-steeped in sadness—is whether the movie has mid and post-credits scenes and how many; and, of course, whether they’re worth sticking around for even with a full bladder. That last bit may be more important than you think: Wakanda Forever’s runtime is a whopping 2 hours and 41 minutes. That’s just fifteen minutes shorter than the ridiculously long DC film The Batman. The original Black Panther was a much more manageable 2 hours and 15 minutes. Will my Rule Of 20—which suggests most movies these days ought to run about 20 minutes shorter—apply to Wakanda Forever? Critics are enjoying the film, but apparently not as much as the first one (85% vs 96% on Rotten Tomatoes).
In any case, let’s answer the question you’ve come here for.
Does Wakanda Forever Have Post-Credits Scenes?
The answer to this is yes and no. Wakanda Forever has a mid-credits scene but not a post-credits stinger. Often the MCU films have both. Typically there’s a longer, meatier mid-credits scene followed by something funny or some kind of tease at the very end. Some of these are funnier—and more worthwhile—than others. The reason there’s no post-credits scene is one of tone. Wakanda Forever has a bit too much gravitas for a snappy bit at the end.
Wakanda Forever’s executive producer Nate Moore told Collider:
“Obviously, the weight of this movie is a bit different, and the tone of this movie is a bit different, and it felt, especially, once people see the film. We felt the ending was kind of poetic that to then go back and say, “Hey, there’s a tag at the end of the credits,” felt a little disingenuous tonally from what we were doing. Much like [Avengers] Endgame didn’t have a tag, this didn’t feel like a movie that needed it.”
There is a mid-credits scene, however, which is good news since you won’t have to wait as long. I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s definitely worth sticking around for and serves as something of a tribute to Boseman and his character T’Challa. It should also help pave the way for future Black Panther films (or TV shows). Let me know what you thought of Wakanda Forever on Twitter or Facebook.
