Topline
Republicans and independent voters who lean toward the GOP are split on nominating former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election according to a new ABC/Washington Post poll, marking a significant decline in popularity for Trump among key voters.
Key Facts
Among Republicans and independents who are inclined to vote with the party, 47% support nominating Trump for the 2024 race while 46% would like to see someone else, according to the poll.
Those figures represent a 20-point fall in support for Trump compared to his 2020 nomination, according to ABC.
For Democrats and independent voters who lean toward the party, only 35% support choosing Biden for the 2024 nomination while 56% would favor another candidate, the poll found.
If Biden and Trump were to have a 2024 rematch, the poll found Biden would garner 48% compared to 46% for Trump–however, the poll noted that if only registered voters are taken into consideration, the results reverse to 46% for Biden and 48% For Trump.
The poll was conducted by telephone from Sept. 18 to Sept. 25 and surveyed a random national sample of 1,006 adults, including 908 registered voters.
Key Background
Both Biden and Trump have faced blows that could jeopardize their White House runs. Biden has struggled with low approval ratings in recent months, and polls consistently find that most Democratic voters do not want him to run again in 2024. However, a jump in Biden’s approval ratings pushed by recent victories like passing the Inflation Reduction Act and dropping gas prices has reportedly encouraged the president to plan to announce his candidacy for 2024. Trump’s popularity among voters has been hit by his involvement in the Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill–which nearly half of Americans think he should face criminal charges over, according to a June poll–and investigations into allegations he improperly storing classified White House documents and a lawsuit by New York claiming Trump and three of his adult children committed “repeated and persistent” acts of fraud in running the Trump Organization.
