A “very angry” Xavi Hernandez ripped into his FC Barcelona team for playing the “worst game of the season” after their shock 1-0 defeat away at Almeria on Sunday.
The hosts beat the Blaugrana for the first time in their history thanks to a first half goal from El Bilal Toure.
Following a lacklustre display from his men, Xavi wasted no time slamming them to broadcaster Movistar in Spain during his post-match interview.
Xavi described himself as “very p*ssed off” and said that it was “the worst game of the season, both in attack and defense, as well as in construction and intensity”.
“Nothing came out well. Maybe fatigue takes its toll,” Xavi suggested, in a nod to Barca’s ill-fated trip to England on Thursday where they were eliminated from the Europa League by Manchester United.
“We played a bad game. I’m angry because it was an opportunity to get to ten points [clear] and we didn’t get it,” Xavi said, with Barca now seven in front of bitter rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table.
“We are upset and we have to find solutions now, because the decisive stretch in La Liga and the Copa is here and we cannot fail anymore.
“It was a golden opportunity with Madrid having drawn and we played the worst game at the worst moment of the season,” Xavi said, demanding an immediate change in mentality.
Starting with a four-man midfield, Xavi later switched to a 3-4-3 and even tried center back Ronal Araujo up top.
“We have tried everything,” admitted a resigned Xavi. “They defended very well, we had chances but they weren’t very clear.
“It hasn’t been a very good day for us. It’s a bad day,” he concluded.
As Xavi pointed out, Barca now need to brush themselves off and get back on the horse post haste.
After suffering two consecutive defeats, they face Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals at the Bernabeu on Thursday.
Beating United’s eternal enemies Liverpool 5-2 in the Champions League midweek, Los Blancos are on a high whereas Barca have lost momentum.
Hopefully for Culers worldwide, Xavi and his charges can turn the tide and kick on for the rest of the season with a domestic triple still possible.
