Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is always a keen pick in NFL fantasy leagues. This year his production could reach another level.
“I don’t see his role changing any time soon,’’ Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “Hopefully, we can do even more with him.’’
That’s high praise for a player with a high motor. Ekeler is eager and ready to increase his contributions while seeking to help the Chargers reach the playoffs for the first season since 2018.
“It’s my job to add as much value as I can,’’ Ekeler said. “Not only in the running back spot, but out in the slot and kind of all over the field.’’
Ekeler was a scoring machine last year, tying the Indianapolis Colts’ Jonathan Taylor for the most touchdowns in the NFL at 20. While the majority of Taylor’s touchdowns came on the ground, Ekeler was a dual threat with 12 via the rush and eight as a receiver.
“I’m going to be efficient wherever you put me,’’ Ekeler said.
That L.A. leans so much on Ekeler isn’t as surprising as the route that got him here. As an undrafted rookie coming out of Western State Colorado in 2017, Ekeler’s goal was to make the team.
He not only did that, but he’s become among the most important complement pieces for standout quarterback Justin Herbert.
The Chargers showed their appreciation for Ekeler by awarding him a four-year extension in 2020 that’s worth $24.5 million, with $15 million being guaranteed.
He delivered a sensational season last year, setting or tying career marks in nearly every significant offensive category.
But Ekeler hit training camp this week like an unknown again, trying to earn a roster spot. He’s lean, mean and Staley has noticed.
“He’s in the best shape of his life,’’ Staley said. “He looks fantastic.’’
For the Chargers to do something exceptional this year they’ll need Ekeler’s running, passing, and now, providing leadership. He’s not exactly long in the tooth but his story is one with some teeth to it.
“These guys are on it as far as the mental part,’’ Ekeler said of the Chargers’ younger running backs. “Obviously (they need to continue) to progress in the offense, but then it’s going to come down to special teams as well.
“I remember that being a big part of the reason why I made the team and was able to stay on the team in my younger years was my value on special teams.’’
Few Bolts give the squad more bang for the buck than Ekeler. L.A. hopes to cash in again this season, with Ekeler carrying a work load few can handle.
“I’m not expecting any kind of dip in usage with him,’’ Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said. “Just being smart with how many times he’s getting hit every game is something that you have to keep an eye on.’’
Ekeler’s focus is hoisting the trophy named after Lombardi’s grandfather, Vince, which goes to the Super Bowl winner. That’s a long way from the start of training camp, but considering Ekeler’s journey, it doesn’t seem so impossible.
