Valve still makes actual computer games from time to time, but the Half-Life 2 and Portal 2 developer is much more focused on other projects like its VR efforts and running Steam.
The game company is also, apparently, in the business of hiding fake game art amongst its Steam Summer Sale games.
These fake games appeared during this year’s sale (which is now over) and were obviously not purchasable.
The artwork was created by Valve’s Claire Hummel, who noted on Twitter that the “idea for this sale was to design a bunch of relatively convincing key art to hide in the Steam storefront, all of which were a little weird on second glance.”
Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton, two writers at Valve, came up with the idea and would send the game titles to Hummel so she could create the artwork.
As you can see in the image at the top of this post, some of these games actually have pretty awesome premises. What happens if you screw up and don’t get the king to the toilet in Help Get The King To The Toilet? I mean, it sounds to me like has to go #2 so things could get messy fast.
Similar potty humor can be found in Hold In Your Farts which has the hilarious tagline, “Could you be my next champion?”
There are many more fake games, such as Dead Seagull Zoo Magnate and Bass Ain’t Bitin’ 2022 and most of them are, indeed, plausible but so overtly goofy that you might clue in that they’re fakes.
Just one of the games is not so obvious and it stands out from the rest. That is, of course, The Consecration Of Esthme which looks like an indie horror game.
They should have tossed in a fake Half-Life or Portal game just to see what happened.
