Brackets everywhere are busted and March Madness is in full swing after a thrilling start to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Three of Thursday’s first round games went into overtime and several notable upsets occurred to get the Big Dance started in a big way.
The most notable result of the tourney thus far was Saint Peter’s stunning victory over Kentucky. The No. 15-seeded Peacocks became just the 10th team in history to dethrone a No. 2 seed in the Round of 64.
Saint Peter’s, a small school located in Jersey City, New Jersey, battled the blue-blooded Wildcats to a draw after 40 exciting minutes of regulation play. The Peacocks went on to pull off a bracket-busting 85-79 overtime win that will likely go down as the biggest upset of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Saint Peter’s was a 17.5-point underdog for the contest and Kentucky was one of the most popular picks to make the Final Four this year.
The Peacocks now take on a Murray State squad that also needed overtime to vanquish their foe. The Racers ultimately thwarted San Francisco’s attempt at a small upset, setting up an intriguing matchup between two small programs with a Sweet 16 berth in the East region on the line.

Updated March Madness Bracket
Only 192 brackets across the four major sites (NCAA.com, ESPN, Yahoo and CBS) remain perfect.
The No. 12 over No. 5 upset has become a staple of March Madness and yesterday saw two more occurrences.
New Mexico bested UConn for the Aggies’ first NCAA Tournament victory since 1993, while unheralded Richmond shocked the world by besting a red-hot Iowa squad.
The Huskies came into March Madness with questions surrounding their defense after earning a No. 5 seed in the West region. Those concerns proved to be well founded after UConn failed to contain New Mexico star Teddy Allen, the junior guard who dropped 37 points in an eventual 70-63 victory.
After taking home the Big Ten tournament title, the fifth-seeded Hawkeyes became a trendy pick to make a deep run in the Midwest region. Few expected the school to lose as a double-digit favorite, but Richmond added to its NCAA Tournament legacy with another big upset.
The Spiders—surprising winners of the A-10 Tournament—repeated their successes as a No. 12 seed from over a decade ago. Richmond won a pair of contests in the 2011 NCAA Tournament as the same seed and could make more noise on Saturday against Providence in their second round bout.
The pair of No. 12 seed victories made it 52 wins for them in 145 first-round games since the NCAA Tournament expanded to its current 64-team format in 1985. Richmond’s three all-time 12-5 upsets are the most in March Madness history.
Creighton also pulled an upset yesterday over San Diego State that may not look impressive on paper—the No. 9 seed Bluejays were just two-point underdogs—but was incredible to witness.
The Aztecs had led by double-digits for a good portion of the contest and still held a nine-point lead late. The Bluejays showed their resolve and benefitted from finally getting their threes to fall after missing the first 10 they took. San Diego State’s missed free throws late in regulation cost the school a chance to win and Creighton converted a huge go-ahead three-point play to advance to the second round.
The rarest upset is the No. 16 over No. 1, which has only occurred once when UMBC put the program o the map with a win over Virginia four years ago. While Baylor, Gonzaga and Kansas—all three No. 1 seeds in action yesterday—advanced, the Bulldogs suffered a scare against a plucky Georgia State squad.
Gonzaga only took a two-point lead into half and was in real danger of being upset after 30 minutes of play. The Bulldogs rallied around Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren—a seven-foot freshman with a shot at being the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft—late, going on a 24-1 run to end any chance of the Panthers becoming March Madness legends.
The 2022 NCAA Tournament resumes in just a few short hours with the final 16 games of the first round.
Things tip off at 12:15 p.m. ET with a great matchup between Ohio State and Loyola-Chicago and continue until the clash between TCU and Seton Hall—which gets underway at 9:57 p.m. ET—wraps up.
