Brian Armstrong, head of U.S.-based crypto exchange Coinbase, has spoken out after a television advertisement for the platform was blocked from airing in the United Kingdom.
The move, he said, reveals more about the state of the country’s financial establishment than the ad itself.
Armstrong took to social media to address the situation, noting that the commercial had triggered “quite a reaction” from British broadcasters. While avoiding direct political commentary, he hinted that the decision may have struck a nerve. “If you can’t say it, maybe there’s a grain of truth in it,” he remarked.
The Coinbase chief argued that his point was not to single out the UK, but to underline a global reality: legacy financial systems often fail to serve large portions of the population. In his view, crypto offers a viable path toward a more inclusive and efficient framework, both in Britain and abroad.
UK’s Crypto Mindset Still Stuck in the Past
Armstrong also criticized what he sees as an outdated public perception of digital assets in the UK, where some still associate cryptocurrency primarily with gambling. This, he said, overlooks its real potential to modernize and improve financial infrastructure for everyone.
He welcomed attempts to challenge or even censor Coinbase’s message, claiming such actions often have the opposite effect. “The more people try to shut down this conversation, the more attention it gets,” he said.
According to Armstrong, Coinbase will continue running similar campaigns in other countries, including the U.S., in an effort to highlight the role crypto can play in reshaping the global economy.
