Last month was a good example of the old advice that long-term investors should avoid worrying about day-to-day moves in the market. Stocks slid for most of May, as companies issued profit warnings, reacting to the impact of inflation. The S&P 500 was close to slumping into a bear market, defined as a drop of 20% from the high.
