Topline
The U.S. aims to send more weapons to Ukraine as part of a military aid package worth $750 million, unnamed officials told Reuters and the Washington Post Tuesday, the latest round of support for the war-torn country as it continues to resist Russian forces.
Key Facts
The U.S. may send Ukraine heavy ground artillery systems such as howitzer cannons, along with coastal defensive drones and suits designed to protect against possible biological, chemical or nuclear weapons attacks, according to the Post, though officials cautioned the U.S. is still determining exactly which mix of weapons it will send.
The package will be “built around the idea of larger scale combat,” and will include weapons to assist Ukraine in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where Russia has concentrated its troops in recent days, officials told NBC News.
An official announcement is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to Reuters.
The Pentagon declined Forbes’ request for comment.
Key Background
The U.S. has committed more than $1.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24, the Department of Defense said last week. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Sunday the U.S. aims to get Ukraine “the weapons it needs” to stop Russia from committing what the White House has deemed war crimes. The U.S. said it has sent thousands of anti-aircraft and anti-armor systems to Ukraine, along with other supplies like small arms, ammunition, and medical aid. More than 30 countries have supplied Ukraine with some form of military assistance, according to the Pentagon, though no country has sent its own military into Ukraine for risk of expanding the conflict. While fighting around the Kyiv area has ceased in recent days as Ukraine reclaimed towns around the capital, the war has continued to rage in eastern Ukraine, and is likely to “intensify” in the coming weeks as Russia shifts its focus to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the U.K. Ministry of Defense said Tuesday.
