Topline
U.S. military forces shot down a flying object over Lake Huron on Sunday, Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.) said, marking the fourth takedown of an aerial vessel over North America since last Saturday, when fighter jets destroyed a suspected Chinese spy balloon first spotted over U.S. territory on January 28.
Key Facts
Military fighter pilots “decommissioned another “object from the skies above Lake Huron some time Sunday afternoon, Bergman tweeted, noting he was in contact with the Department of Defense.
The FAA said earlier Sunday that it closed the national defense airspace over Lake Michigan to allow the U.S. military to probe a “potential contact” that was determined not to be a threat.
The takedown comes after the U.S. shot down a flying object over Canada on Saturday and a vessel above Alaska on Friday.
While it’s unclear what the object destroyed over Lake Huron was, intelligence officials believe the two others shot down last week are also balloons, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
