Two Awesome Retro FPS ‘DOOM’ Clones Release This Week

April is upon us and that means a whole bunch of new video game releases. March was a huge month for games with the release of titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake and the massive Diablo IV beta. This month we have some big AAA video game releases as well, with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor leading the pack.

But there are also lots of very cool looking indie titles and smaller, more unique releases coming out this month. Two that caught my eye recently are both retro first-person shooters, both DOOM clones that emulate the pixelated heavy metal feel and style of 90s shooters, and both release on the same exact day: April 6th.

The first of these is Hyperviolent from developer Terminist Arcade. The official description of the game reads:

An ancient evil has awoken in the depths of a remote mining asteroid, stirred from its slumber by man’s lust for power. Unaware, you answer a distress call and become stranded, surrounded by monstrous foes. Unravel the mystery of this madness and stop its spread in this violent retro shooter!

The trailer is pretty great, with a nice pulsing techno soundtrack and lots of pixel-gore and a funky arsenal to play with:

See Hyperviolent on Steam where you’ll also find a free demo so you can take it for a spin.

The second game is Supplice—the French word for torture—from studio Mekworx. The official description reads:

Supplice is a stylish throwback shooter inspired by the mid-90s FPS glory days and the legendary Doom modding community. Mixing the retro stylings of 90s era shooters with colorful graphics and frantic gameplay, it creates an experience that’s ever so familiar but also exciting and fresh.

This one looks excellent also. Here’s the trailer:

What’s crazy about this title is that according to the developers, Supplice “has been in on-and-off development for about 14 years. In this time it developed from an ambitious Doom megawad into the idea of a stand-alone game that would not only be a total conversion mod, but would firmly stand on its own feet. But at its core, Supplice is the fruit of the passionate Doom modding community, and as such it has community-driven development written in its DNA.”

Check out the game’s Steam page here.

It’s important to note that both these titles release on April 6th into Early Access. That means that neither will have the full game available at launch. Both plan to add content steadily.

Hyperviolent will launch with 5 out of the total 11 levels with a planned goal of full launch in the first half of 2023. That includes adding more guns and multiplayer features (both co-op and PvP).

Meanwhile, Supplice will launch new episodes over the course of the next year, with the sixth and final episode landing alongside the full launch of the game in Q2 2024.

As with all Early Access and in-development titles, these are estimates that could change depending on a whole host of issues.
