Twitter Blue Subscribers Will Now Be Able To Hide Their Blue Checkmarks

Topline

Subscribers who pay for Twitter Blue—soon to be rebranded as X Blue—now have the option to hide their blue checkmarks, which have been touted as one of the most prominent benefits of the $8-per-month subscription service.

Key Facts

Twitter—which is now known as X—updated its support page for the subscription service, adding a section called “hide your checkmark.”

The page notes that enabling the feature will hide a user’s checkmark from their profile and posts.

The implementation of this feature isn’t bug-free yet as the support article warns that the blue tick may still appear in “some places” and “some features could still reveal you have an active subscription.”

Some of the service’s features will also not be available while the check mark is hidden, the support article adds.

Twitter hasn’t said why it added this option, which effectively nullifies a feature the company and its owner Elon Musk pitched as a major perk for subscribers.

News Peg

The blue checkmark previously helped identify verified accounts of notable public figures or entities on the platform. Since Musk bought the platform last year and implemented the monthly subscription service, the badge has seen a dramatic change in reputation. The billionaire changed it into a paid feature accessible to any account that signed up. The blue tick is also no longer a sign of “verification” as users are only required to link their accounts with a phone number. Several high-profile celebrities, including LeBron James, have spoken out publicly about refusing to pay for the badge. People whose accounts have sported a blue checkmark have become the targets of internet memes mocking them for paying for the badge.
