Trump Indicted On 37 Felony Counts In Mar-A-Lago Documents Case

Topline

Former President Donald Trump faces 37 federal felony charges for allegedly mishandling classified documents, according to a Justice Department indictment unsealed Friday that accuses Trump of bringing a trove of top-secret military documents to Mar-A-Lago and instructing his associates to hide and conceal the documents from federal investigators.

Key Facts

The 37 charges include 31 counts of violating an Espionage Act statute that prohibits willful retention of national defense information, and others related to obstructing justice and making false statements.

The documents Trump brought with him to Mar-A-Lago included information about defense and weapons capabilities of the U.S. and foreign countries, U.S. nuclear programs and plans for a possible retaliatory attack on a foreign country, according to the indictment.

On at least two occasions, Trump showed classified records to people who did not have security clearance to view them, according to the indictment, which says Trump’s conduct “could put at risk the national security of the United States.”

The Justice Department unsealed the indictment, which details charges against Trump and his aide, Walt Nauta, on Friday, a day after Trump announced on Truth Social he’d been indicted in the agency’s long-running probe of his handling of classified records after leaving office.
